It was, however, the visitors who got off to the better start, and should have been ahead inside the opening 20 minutes when Franco Brienza found space in the box, though his first time effort went wide of the far post.

Minutes later his teammate Edgar Barreto drilled an effort from the edge of the area, though one which Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante was able to save comfortably.

Parma’s first real effort on goal came through winger Nicola Sansone, who volleyed clean over the bar after 22 minutes.

Towards the end of the half Palermo were comfortably back in control, and Mirante was twice forced into excellent saves to deny Josip Ilicic from distance, split by a snapshot from Parma’s Marco Parolo, though one which went wide of the post from the edge of the area.

Parma started the second half the better side, and almost took the lead early on after Massimo Gobbi’s cross from the left found the head of Belfodil in the box, though he didn’t get enough contact on the ball and it looped into the arms of Palermo keeper Benussi.

Just past the hour mark came the game’s first goal, with Belfodil atoning for his earlier error by prodding in from a corner, handing Parma the advantage.

Palermo applied increasing pressure as the game wore on, with Parma being pushed back. Eventually the pressure told, and Michael Morganella’s cross from the left found ex-Parma striker and substitute Igor Budan, who headed the ball beyond Mirante and into the net.

But, it would be a former Palermo player, Amauri, who would have the last laugh. Incredibly, the gangly striker came off the bench to score a last-gasp winner, drilling a shot beyond a fumbling Benussi, securing Parma all three points.
